In order to be alive, one must eat plenty of “live” foods. A healthy diet consists of plenty of live foods, which contain powerful life giving enzymes present in fresh raw fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. Spouted seeds and beans are consumed as well. This type of diet can play a vital role in an alternative medicine strategy of regaining health.
Diet – Raw Foods
Plant enzymes which are present in uncooked food help the body to digest food and are responsible for transporting minerals, proteins and other nutrients into cells. Many proponents of this healthy diet say that it leaves them feeling lighter and more energetic.
Cooking vegetables depletes water soluble vitamins, so raw vegetables contain more vitamin C, betacarotine and B complex. The very important component of fiber is reduced as well. A study at the Fred Hutchinson cancer center in Seattle showed that consumption of raw fruits and vegetables was associated consistently with a lower incidence of cancer.
The typical American diet is overprocessed in the extreme, so it lacks vitamins, minerals and enzymes – nutrients which are abundantly available in raw foods.
Diet That Cures What Ails You?
A nutritional biologist at Cornell University conducted a study to see how the raw food diet affects people with fibromyalgia, a nerve and muscle pain disorder. Over a course of six weeks, 30 people were put on a program that included 2-3 glasses of carrot juice, barley greens, raw fruits and vegetables, flaxseed oil and some cooked food at dinner. At the end of the trial, two thirds showed improvements: two participants overcame their severe depression; one woman went back to work after being out on disability.
“Generally the raw food diet works because it is a synergy,” says Michael Donaldson Ph.D. from Cornell. “Vitamins, enzymes, a healthy bowel, balanced emotions, a positive outlook come together in a living way. People overcome allergies, arthritis, cancer, you name it. I am still amazed by the testimonials.”
Rosa Colabro knows what Dr. Donaldson is talking about. Before starting this kind of diet she suffered from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, candida, joint pain, depression, allergies, chronic fatigue, mood swings, gall stones, hearing loss, hair loss, hypoglycemia, hypothyroidism, chronic sinusitis, gout, insomnia and early signs of cancer in breasts and lungs. “In less than 2 years I lost the weight I wanted to and cured myself of my health problems,” says Caldabro.
This healthy diet can indeed be most beneficial. It isn’t necessary to go 100% raw to enjoy the benefits, and in fact I recommend the consumption of whole grain products and Kosher fish such as salmon, bass, cod, flounder, haddock, herring, mackerel, perch, snapper and trout.
I advocate eating nothing but raw fruit until noon in order to detoxify, then a large raw vegetable salad for lunch with raw nuts and seeds. A good dinner could be Kosher fish sauteed in extra virgin olive oil, steamed vegetables or a smaller raw salad and cooked whole grains. There are healthful nutrients in spices, so both raw and cooked food may be liberally seasoned. Diet is a central issue to anyone interested in alternative medicine or health in general.
Diet – Anti-inflammatory
Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury or illness and can facilitate healing. An example of this is a bacterial infection producing a fever, which in turn stimulates the immune system to produce white blood cells with which to fight it. Prolonged inflammation, however, can lead to arthritis and many chronic serious diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer and Parkinson disease.
A few dietary guidelines can be a great help. Choose foods that are low glycemic, lean proteins (animal fat contributes to inflammation) and healthy fats. Drink plenty of water and get lots of fiber from whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Healthy fats include extra virgin olive oil and grapeseed oil. Eliminate or drastically reduce your use of margarine, shortening and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are sources of trans fats, and do the same with butter. Trans fats are especially harmful because they increase levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL or bad cholesterol) and depress levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL or good cholesterol, which removes clot forming LDL from the arteries). Trans fats also increase the tendency of platelets to clump and form artery blocking clots.
Eat black cod (otherwise known as sablefish or butterfish) which is higher in omega-3 fatty acids than most salmon. Omega-3s help thin the blood, prevent blood clots, and reduce inflammation. Other fish high in omega-3s include herring and Alaskan salmon.
